It was a bittersweet occasion for the family and friends of AKA – real name Kiernan Forbes – after his momentous Metro FM Awards win. And celebrating the event were his nearest and dearest, including best friends Sim Dope, Don Design, Da LES, and more.

The rapper’s parents, Lynn and Tony Forbes held a luncheon at his Bryanston home a day after his posthumous win at the awards ceremony.

Girlfriend Nadia Nakai was also there, sharing a tearful tribute to the group.

AKA was shot and killed by unknown gunmen in Durban in February. He was just 35 years old.

AKA CELEBRATION: FAMILY AND FRIENDS COME TOGETHER

On Saturday night, AKA scooped four posthumous awards at the Metro FM Award for his latest album Mass Country.

In pictures and videos posted on their Instagram Stories, AKA’s close group of friends and family came together to celebrate the bittersweet occasion.

The group included Scorpio Siya and Don Design, who were with the star when he was shot and killed. Da LES – whom he recently reconciled with, childhood bestie Sim Dope and fellow muso L-Tido.

AKA’s parents, his brother Steffan Forbes and his uncles and aunts were also there to celebrate. In the clips, the group sipped on Hennessy, took Tequila shots, and shared fond memories of Kiernan.

Dad Tony said in a speech: “Thank you for coming and sharing this moment. You were and you are so special to us. This [awards] is not just Kiernan, this is all of you. So this is a celebration”.

Meanwhile, Nadia thanked the group for supporting her through her grieving process. She said: “I appreciate you guys so much because you make me feel not alone in this process. I feel like I gained a family”.

A HERO AT HERO’S ACRE

Meanwhile, AKA’s parents and friends took his four Metro FM awards to his grave, a day after the music ceremony.

The late rapper scooped four Metro FM Awards in the following categories;

  • Artist of the Year
  • Best Collaboration Song (Lemons to Lemonade ft Nasty C)
  • Best Hip Hop Artist
  • and Best Male Artist

AKA’s posthumous album Mass Country was released just two weeks after his gruesome murder. According to many friends and fans, the hitmaker “knew” it would be his last musical offering.

After appearing at the awards ceremony, the star’s loved ones made a trip to his final resting place at the West Park Cemetry in Johannesburg.

The rapper is buried among music royalty like Mandoza and Robbie Malinga in the Heroes Acre.
