Senzo Meyiwa murder trial: All the twists and turns you need to know about

The murder trial of former Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa is set to commence on Monday 30 May. 

HOW DID SENZO MEYIWA DIE?

Senzo Meyiwa is believed to have been killed in an armed robbery at the home of his then-girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s mom in Vosloorus on 26 October 2014.

  • Her mom Ntombi
  • Kelly’s sister Zandie
  • Zandie’s then-boyfriend Longwe Twala
  • Kelly’s two children – Christian and Thingo
  • Senzo’s two friends – Mthokozisi Thwala and Tumelo Madlala

Five hitmen – Muzikawukhulelwa S’Tembu Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Ziphozonke Maphisa and Fisokuhle Ntuli were arrested and charged after being accused of murdering Senzo. However, the soccer star’s brother Sfiso did not believe the men were the ones to kill his brother.

ALL THE TWISTS AND TURNS IN THE COURTROOM

The murder trial of Senzo began in April 2022 but had been postponed. Senzo’s murder trial will now take place on 30 May. Here’s a recap of what went down in the courtroom. 

  • Kelly sent her lawyer Magdalene Moonsamy to court to conduct a watching brief for her. However, she was excused from the courtroom on 25 April. 
  • State witness Sergeant Thabo Mosia, who is believed to be the first forensic detective to arrive to the crime scene took to the stand on 26 April. He revealed that he did not believe the crime scene had not been tampered with before he arrived on the scene. 
  • Advocate Malesela Teffo broke the news that the DNA found in the suspect’s hat belonged to a female. 
  • Advocate Teffo – who was representing four of the five men accused of murder Senzo – was dramatically arrested in court on 28 April. He was allegedly arrested because he failed to show up for another case but he claimed Cele did not want him on the case.
  • A key witness in the murder trial – Brigadier Philani Ndlovu was confirmed dead by police in May.
