‘Huge loss for the channel’: SABC 1 pays tribute to Pearl Shongwe

SABC 1 paid tribute to their late ‘The Daily Thetha’ presenter Pearl Shongwe who was found dead at her home on Tuesday 8 November.

Public broadcaster channel SABC 1 paid tribute to late Metro FM newsreader Pearl Shongwe, who was found dead at her house on Tuesday 8 November.

SABC 1 PAYS TRIBUTE TO PEARL SHONGWE

Pearl Shongwe was a presenter on SABC 1’s The Daily Thetha. The channel took to Twitter to pay tribute to the 35-year-old via a statement. Take a look…

“This is a huge loss for the channel, and at only 35 years old, Pearl was at the prime of her career and contributed a lot to building a knowledgeable youth and imparted her knowledge about current issues to the youth of South Africa,” said Thulisile Nhlapo, Acting Head of SABC 1.

“SABC 1 will forever be grateful for all she has done on the channel,” continued Nhlapo.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE LATER NEWSREADER? 

Sunday World reported that the late presenter was found dead at her home in Polofields, north of Joburg on Tuesday 8 November. A source told the publication that Shongwe was found dead by neighbours who alerted the police.

“The police are on the scene trying to establish the cause of her death,” said the source.

The late presenter’s family also released a statement confirming that she passed away in her sleep. The family spokesperson Khehla Tshabalala said it is with great sadness that the Shongwe family announces the untimely passing of Pearl.  

“Our daughter was a celebrated radio broadcaster and TV presenter. Her presence will forever live on in our hearts,” he said.
