South African-born businessman and new Twitter boss Elon Musk is not bothered by the hashtag #RIPTwitter as tweeps are suggesting that the social media platform is dying.

#RIPTwitter shot up to the number one spot on the Twitter trends list after reports that hundreds of staff have left the Twitter headquarters on Thursday, 17 November.

HUNDREDS OF EMPLOYEES QUIT AT TWITTER

Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, has made some drastic changes since buying the company on 27 October for $44billion (about R800 billion).

Besides announcing a subscription fee for the bule tick verification badge, he fired half of the staff in his first week.

He also gave remaining employees an ultimatum to pledge working under his new hard-charging culture or join the fired staff. Many, it seems, opted for the latter.

According to the Washington Post, one former employee said there is no longer “a skeleton crew manning the system.”

“It will continue to coast until it runs into something, and then it will stop,” the employee said.

Bloomberg reported that an email sent to Twitter employees on 9 November said remote work would be banned, however, another message Elon Musk sent to employees on 17 November said that remote work can be available if approved.

“All that is required for approval is that your manager takes responsibility for ensuring that you are making an excellent contribution,” Musk said in the email.

IS THIS THE END OF TWITTER?

As a result of the changes, tweeps are fearing a potential collapse of the company.

Tweeps have been sharing memes and saying goodbye to Twitter under the hashtag #RIP Twitter.

ELON MUSK MAKES A MOCKERY OF #RIPTWITTER

Unbothered, Elon Musk also joined in and seemingly mocked the #RIPTwitter trend by tweeting a meme with Twitter’s logo on a grave stone.
