RIP Pearl Shongwe: Tributes pour in following newsreader’s passing

‘When death visits, it is never pleasant for anyone:’: Metro FM news anchor Pearl Shongwe was found dead in her home.

Messages of condolences are pouring in following news of the passing of radio and TV presenter Pearl Shongwe on Tuesday, 8 November.

According to the SABC, business manager for Metro FM Kina Nhlengethwa says the family has confirmed her passing.

PEARL SHONGWE’S BODY WAS FOUND WITH NO INJURIES

The Metro FM presenter, who was a newsreader on the Touch Down with Tbo Touch, reportedly passed away at her Polofields home in Johannesburg at the age of 35.

According to several media reports, Pearl Shongwe’s body was discovered by her neighbours, with no injuries reported.

“We regret to inform you that one of our residents has passed away inside her Unit. The family of the resident has been notified and is at The Polofields presently.

“You may notice police, ambulance and coroner vehicles in the Estate during the day. Please do not be alarmed as they are attending to the situation. Currently, there is no reason for concern,” a message from the neighbourhood forum read on Twitter.

PEARL SHONGWE’S CAREER

Apart from being a news anchor on Metro FM, Pearl Shongwe was also a presenter on the SABC talk show, Daily Thetha.

The Soweto-born media personality also presented sport on SABC’s 404 News channel and Morning Live on weekends alongside Simphiwe Ncongwane.

TRIBUTES POUR IN

Fans, friends and colleagues of the radio and TV personality have taken to social media to pay tribute to her.

For many, Pearl Shongwe’s voice and humility are what shone through the most.

Host of the Metro FM midday show, Sabelo “DJ Sabby” Mtshali wrote: “Rest easy sis Pearl Shongwe. You were always a positive person and such a career-driven individual. It was an honour working with you and knowing you. Condolences to your family, friends and colleagues.”
