The bouquet that sat atop Queen Elizabeth II’s casket featured flowers from her wedding bouquet from her nuptials to Prince Philip in 1947.

The bouquet that sat atop Queen Elizabeth II’s casket featured flowers cut from a plant grown from her wedding bouquet, announced via a tweet on Monday 19 September. 

THE FLOWERS THAT SAT ATOP THE QUEEN’S CASKET IS FROM HER WEDDING 

The official Twitter account for the Royal Family tweeted that King Charles III had a special request for his mother, Queen Elizabeth II’s casket. At His Majesty’s request, the bouquet that sat atop the Queen’s coffin contained florals from her wedding bouquet from her nuptials to Prince Philip. 

The pair tied the knot on 20 November 1947. So, they were married for almost 74 years until Prince Phillip’s death on 9 April 2021.

“At The King’s request, the wreath contains foliage of Rosemary, English Oak and Myrtle (cut from a plant grown from Myrtle in The Queen’s wedding bouquet) and flowers, in shades of gold, pink and deep burgundy, with touches of white, cut from the gardens of Royal Residences,” read the tweet.

Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral took place on Monday 19 September. The late monarch passed away peacefully at Balmoral Castle in Scotland on Thursday 8 September. Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral is marked as a bank holiday in the England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

  • The flowers have been made sustainable on request of the King and will be buried with the Queen.
  • These flowers were cut from the gardens of Buckingham Palace, Clarence House and Highgrove House, according to The Mirror.
  • While Myrtle is an ancient symbol of a happy marriage, rosemary is a symbol of remembrance.
  • English Oak symbolises the strength of love.
  • The Royal standard is reflected by the shades of gold, pink and deep burgundy as well as touches of white.
