Umhlobo Wenene radio presenter Putco Mafani has been suspended from the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) on Monday 24 January after participating in the viral #NkaoTempelaChallenge. Mafani shared in an interview with HeraldLIVE that it “never occurred” to him that dancing on the table of the radio studio would land him in hot water…

PUTCO MAFANI’S SUSPENSION

On Tuesday 25 January, SABC confirmed that Putco Mafani had been suspended for dancing to Mellow and Sleazy’s viral hit Nkao Tempela on the table of the radio studio.

This comes after Metro FM presenter Dineo Ranaka was recently suspended for doing the #UmlandoChallenge on office furniture.

The SABC confirmed that Mafani had been “unscheduled” from Umhlobo Wenene.

PUTCO MAFANI ON HIS ‘HARSH’ SUSPENSION

Speaking to Daron Mann’s HeraldLive, Putco Mafani shared that as a radio presenter he has always believed that happiness breeds productivity. “I’m always happy, I’m always a jolly good fellow in the studio,” he added.

The former Kaizer Chiefs player said he danced for 60 000 roaring football fans “right in the centre of the pitch” at a stadium in Gauteng.

On his suspension he said: “What caught the eye of everybody is jumping on the table. I thought the table was strong enough, the table wasn’t under threat.”

“Without really thinking about whether or not the equipment would be in danger, I decided to jump on the table and I asked a colleague of mine to take the video and I killed it.”

“It never occurred to me it would be an offence warranting a suspension but it’s fine, it’s water under the bridge. I thought it was too harsh.”

THE REACTION

The seasoned radio presenter said he received mixed reactions about his suspension. He added that “mostly” some were joking, but others felt it was “blown out of proportion”.

“I choose to say that I could’ve handled my excitement in a different way as well. What if I hurt myself? To me what is important is myself, my body, my health. What if I had injured myself?”

Putco Mafani is set to return to the airwaves on Monday 31 January.
