Oscar Pistorius has officially been denied parole – but South Africans are comparing his case to that of fellow celebrity Jub Jub, who was granted an early release. They’ve also roped in Sindisiwe Manqele, the woman who killed Skwatta Kamp member Flabba, who was also granted parole.

The former Moja Love presenter – real name Molemo Maarohanye – was convicted of murder for the death of four school children, whom he killed in a 2010 car crash. But his charge was overturned and downgraded to culpable homicide.

On Friday, Oscar’s hopes of leaving prison were dashed after the Department of Correctional Services claimed that he had not served his minimum period behind bars. Under South African law, offenders are considered for parole after serving half their sentences.

In 2010, Jub Jub and a friend Themba Tshabalala crashed their cars whilst under the influence of hard drugs. The duo – who were drag racing – killed four school children and injured two others.

In 2012, both were sentenced to murder and received 25 years in jail each for murder, attempted murder, and other related offences. Jub Jub later appealed the sentence, which was downgraded from murder to culpable homicide.

As such, his sentence was reduced from 25 years to just ten years. In 2017, after serving four years and one month, the singer and his friend were granted parole.

Sindisiwe Manqele was granted parole in 2022 after serving six years in jail. She was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment following the murder of her boyfriend Flabba in 2015.

According to the Department of Correctional Services, Sindiswe – who stabbed Flabba through the heart – met all the parole criteria, including serving the minimum time of her sentence, completing planned programmes by the department, and participating in the Victim-Offender Dialogue in 2018.

Meanwhile, Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide in October 2014 for the death of Reeva Steenkamp.

This was later upgraded to murder in December 2015, and he was handed a six-year prison sentence. However, the Supreme Court of Appeal increased his jail term to 13 years and five months following an unsuccessful appeal in November 2017.

According to the Atteridgeville prison, where he spent most of his sentence, Pistorius became eligible for parole in March 2023 after serving. However, this was disputed by a parole board, which claimed Pistorius applied “too early” in his sentence.

According to the parole board, Oscar did not serve half of his sentence yet and will have to stay in prison for at least another 16 months. Pistorius will be able to reapply for parole in August 2024.

TWEEPS REACT: ‘HE SHOULD BE ALLOWED IN SOCIETY’

Meanwhile, tweeps have reacted to the news of Oscar’s failed parole bid. And many have hailed the ruling “unfair,” given the experiences of Jub Jub and Sindisiwe Manqele.

Here’s how tweeps reacted:

@joy_zelda: “Jub Jub’s sentence was reduced from 25 years to 10 years. Yet he only served four years, four months, for killing so many kids. Why did the parents of the kids he killed allow parole to be granted? “

@Mama_Bridgie: “Flabba killer is OUT. Jub Jub is OUT. Why NOT Oscar? Genuine question”

@ChrisExcel102: “Sindisiwe Manqele served seven years for killing one man. Jub Jub did four years for killing four kids. Oscar Pistorius is doing 13 years and five months and still going strong for killing one woman.”

@rakgadi_t: “Jub Jub is out, Flabba’s killer is out, Senzo meyiwa’s killers are free, DJ Sumbody’s killers are still free to name a few. So honestly, Oscar has been punished, and if he qualifies, he should be allowed into society.”
