Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle’s bombshell TV interview with Oprah Winfrey lost out at the Emmy Awards on Sunday, 12 September to a series about Italian food and culture.

Oprah’s Meghan and Harry interview

According to Reuters, the two-hour sit-down with Harry and Meghan in March sent shock waves through the British monarchy when the couple made various claims which saw them step down as senior members of the royal family. During the interview, Prince Harry revealed that there is an ongoing rift between him, his brother Prince William and his father Prince Charles.

The interview was the first since they moved to California and was watched by more than 49 million people worldwide in the first three days, broadcaster CBS television said at the time.

Oprah and her team scored an Emmy nod in the best-hosted nonfiction series category but were beaten by actor Stanley Tucci’s Searching for Italy travel and food show. Tucci’s CNN show consists of six episodes, in which he travels around Italy, exploring traditional dishes and unveiling guarded secrets about the land, according to The Daily Mail

When to watch the Emmy awards

Neither Harry nor Meghan attended Sunday’s low-key ceremony for creative arts, which precedes the main Emmy Awards show next week. But, whether they show up for the main event, remains to be seen: The main event, the 73rd Emmy Awards will air live coast-to-coast on 19 September 2021.

It was previously reported that organisers want the royal couple to present an award, according to editors at The Sun newspaper.

“The Sussexes are in high demand – it would be their first red carpet appearance since Megxit and their full-time Californian move,” a Los Angeles-based source told the outlet. “Oprah is planning to attend the night, which could help get them there.”
