South African DJ and producer DJ Maphorisa has found himself in a twar (Twitter war) with Nigerian musician Davido.

The afrobeats singer, on Wednesday 14 September, called out the amapiano DJ for sidelining him when crediting the success of amapiano in the rest of the African continent.

MAPHORISA SETS THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON AMAPIANO

Maphorisa and Davido’s mini “war of words” started when a Twitter user attributed the success of amapiano to Davido.

“Davido brought Amapiano from South Africa two years ago and made it a successful genre in Africa and Beyond, Wizkid is now hopping on the same genre after Davido made it a successful genre. This is how many African artists have been benefiting from Davido’s success for over 12yrs,” said the tweep.

With tweeps debating this view, Maphorisa decided to set the record straight by attributing the music genre’s success in Africa to Davido’s fellow afrobeats musicians Wizkid and Burna Boy. It is a known fact that there has been on-again, off-again rivalry among the three Nigerian artists — so much so that collaborations are few and far between among them, despite being the biggest musicians in their country.

“Kabza & Maphorisa were the first to put whizz kid [Wizkid] and Burnaboy [Burna Boy] on an amapiano song Sponono that was a historical moment 3 years ago, research before tweeting, also it was the first time Wiz and Burna jumped on the same song together. Let it sink in,” he said.

DAVIDO RESPONDS

However, Maphorisa’s tweet did not sit well with Davido as he responded to him by asking why the Scorpion Kings member does not and has never liked him.

“You’ve never liked me. Why? I’ve always been good to you … Anyway!” Davido said.

Responding to the Fall hitmaker, Maphorisa said that it wasn’t personal. The producer humbly explained to Davido that he was just “adding to the ampiano story” and he, infact, respects him.

I’m not fighting with you at all, my brother. I’m just adding to the amapiano story, because it’s a BIG story with many players. Also this is a historical moment for SA. We’ve never had a genre blow like this. ALL LOVE ONE AFRICA. Respect u big time u did a lot 4 the Culture
