Plans for a national shutdown on Monday, 20 March – facilitated by EFF leader Julius Malema – is in full swing. But making his decision not to participate known is outspoken muso The Kiffness.
The Cape Town hitmaker – real name Dave Scott – has faced widespread backlash after he announced his plans to boycott the protest. He also courted controversy for labelling Malema and his party as “terrorists”.
THE KIFFNESS SLAMS NATIONAL SHUTDOWN PLANS
On his Twitter account, The Kiffness took a jab at the EFF and their national shutdown plans.
Sharing a screenshot of the definition of the word “terrorists”, he tweeted: “Any political party that shuts down roads, businesses & schools against the will of ordinary citizens & makes threats against anyone who doesn’t comply isn’t a political party, but a terrorist organisation.
He added: “@EFFSouthAfrica are terrorists. Where is @SAHRCommission?”
To back up his allegations, The Kiffness then shared a link to an article about the EFF warning businesses to close during the national shutdown, or face being looted.
He also responded to a video clip of Malema claiming it is South Africans’ “constitutional right” to protest, by tweeting: “I’m shutting down my long weekend plans to work on Monday”.
According to BusinessTech, Malema claims the motive behind the national shutdown is two-fold; calling for President Cyril Ramaphosa to resign, and protesting load shedding.
TWEEPS CALL MUSO A ‘RACIST’
Unfortunately for The Kiffness, many South Africans sided with Julius Malema’s statement that it was their right to participate in a national shutdown.
And in doing so, many took a swipe at the quirky singer, accusing him of being a “racist”

THE KIFFNESS: ‘I’M NOT A SETTLER’
The Kiffness then got into a Twitter spat with a fellow tweep who criticised the muso’s ancestors.
The muso clapped back: “My granddad came from Scotland in the early 1900s. He was an ophthalmologist & when he got here, he discovered trachoma was causing many natives to go blind.

“With his own funding, he found the cure & infection went from 40% to 6%. You don’t know anything about my ancestry.”
He added: “All of his endeavours were carried out in a selfless manner, unfunded, with the prime objective of helping fellow human beings.
“He was not a coloniser or a tyrant, he was a hero. Painting all white people with the same brush makes you a bigot.”

To another critic, The Kiffness clapped back: “I’m not a settler. I was born here. The nerve to tell me I have the nerve for being born in a country that I had no control over. Tsek”
