Thabo Bester — also known as the Facebook Rapist — is back in the news, almost 10 years after his conviction for the heinous crimes he committed.

This is because there are unanswered questions about his death which the Department of Correctional Services announced in May 2022.

According to the Sunday Times, his alleged wife and celebrity doctor Nandipha Magudumana hinted that he would return home in early 2022.

The publication revealed that in September 2020, Magudumana and Bester — who used Katlego Nkwana as his alias at the time — signed a R40 000 a month rental agreement with 4Tune Property Smiths estate agency for a property in Johannesburg. The couple had virtual meetings with the property agent who thought Bester (or Nkwana) was “working overseas”.

Katlego Nkwana was just one of many aliases that Bester used. IOL reports that his other names included Thomas Bester, Tom Bester, Thabo Tom Bester, Tom Kelly, Thomas Kelly Bester, Thomas Berter, TK, Thomas Kelly Young, Kelly Young, Thomas Magagula, Thabo Magagula, Kelly Johnstone, Rufus Mahopo and Tom Rufus Reddy.

In October 2021, the Magudumana told the property manager that they will need a bigger house as her husband would be back in early 2022 from overseas. Bester escaped in May 2022.

“We realised how serious this was; that this guy had been hiding in our property since his escape.

“We knew that they had planned this. The changing of the security gates, the request for a very, very private property, with high walls, which offered exclusive seclusion, now makes sense,” the property manager was quoted as saying.

Bester’s “death escape” started making headlines after GroundUp reported that it came across a photograph of him shopping at a Woolworths store a month after correctional services announced his death.

His modus operandi was to lure young women, rape them and rob them, under the guise of lucrative modelling jobs. One of his victims, Nomfundo Tyhulu, a car saleswoman who sold him a BMW in 2011 in Sandton, and who later dated the Facebook Rapist, lost her life after he stabbed her to death in Cape Town at a bed and breakfast.

In 2012 he was arrested and sentenced to 50 years in prison. It wasn’t until 10 years after his conviction that he was reported to have been burnt beyond recognition. GroundUp reported that he had been placed in a single cell five days before he set himself alight.
