Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle’s long-awaited podcast, Archetypes, launched on Spotify on Tuesday 23 August with with tennis star Serena Williams being her first guest. Here are three bombshells from the podcast.

Meghan set tongues wagging with the release of the first episode of her podcast, titled The Misconception of Ambition with Serena Williams. The Duchess of Sussex, who now lives in California with her husband Prince Harry and two children — Archie (3) and Lilibet (1) — quit their royal duties at the beginning of 2020.

Meghan revealed that her son Archie’s room caught on fire and he narrowly escaped. Despite being left in tears, she claimed that she was forced to go out and perform another royal engagement while in Cape Town. This occurred during their tour of South Africa back in 2019.

The incident involved a heater in a nursery room catching on fire. This was soon after she delivered a speech to girls in the Nyanga township in Cape Town. She rushed back to see whether Archie was okay. Thereafter, she claims she had to leave him to carry out another official engagement.

“We had to leave our baby… and even though we were being moved into another place afterwards, we still had to leave him and go do another official engagement,” she said.

The Duchess of Sussex revealed that she saw a double standard when she began dating Prince Harry. She explained that there were different connotations to the word ambitious.

“I don’t remember ever personally feeling the negative connotation behind the word ‘ambitious’ until I started dating my now-husband,” she said.

“Apparently ambition is a terrible, terrible thing, for a woman. That is, according to some. Since I’ve felt the negativity behind it, it’s [been] really hard to un-feel it,” she continued.

Williams revealed that Prince Harry helped her with her decision to retire from tennis, long before it was announced. She said that she wanted to walk away quietly but Meghan chimed in, saying she wouldn’t get to have this. Williams explained that Prince Harry spent around an hour discussing her retirement with her.

“I just wanted to just walk away quietly. And that’s how I’ve always seen my career. Just like, all right, I wanted to leave with no goodbyes.”
