Marietjie Bothma – best known for a cameo appearance in a King Pie TV advertisement – has died at age 40.

The vernacular-speaking actress and TV presenter – hailed as a “Zulu woman in white skin” and by her nickname “Intombi Yomzulu” – died after a short illness, reports TshisaLive.

According to the publication, Marietjie died on Monday, 29 May, at Kopanong Hospital in Vereeniging.

The blonde woman first found fame in 2013 after her King Pie advert went viral.  Following that, she landed roles in local soapies and radio stations. She was even one of the MCs at Jacob Zuma’s presidential inauguration in May 2014.

Of her love for the Zulu language, Marietjie told True Love in 2015: “Before my school years, I was lucky enough to sing and learn how to sing in different languages.

“So once I went to school, it was easy for me to say, ‘You know what, I actually love languages, so let me take one language and concentrate on it, and that is what I did with Zulu.”
