MacG’s Podcast and Chill, with over 497 000 subscribers, has risen to become one of the biggest podcasts in South Africa. On a recent episode of the podcast, the 33-year-old podcaster claimed he was approached by a Twitter influencer who said they were being paid R60 000 by a radio station to spin a negative narrative about the podcast.

MACG CLAIMS RADIO STATIONS ARE ‘BUYING’ INFLUENCERS 

On his Podcast and Chill episode on Monday 24 January, MacG alleged that a radio station “bought” a Twitter influencer to speak badly about the podcast. The controversial podcaster claimed the influencer sent him a WhatsApp message asking him if he could “top” R60 000. 

“I’m like to this guy, ‘I can’t match that. Keep doing what you do.’”

“So that’s what they do, they pay Twitter influencers to speak badly about the podcast.”

“They pay these Twitter influencers to push propaganda, to push a message,” he said.

CHILLERS LAMBAST TWITTER INFLUENCERS 

Taking to Twitter, the podcaster’s loyal fanbase slammed the Twitter influencer with one tweep saying anyone who was speaking negatively about Podcast and Chill was “that person”. 

“R60k to tarnish MacG and Podcast and Chill? How much were they getting for President Zuma?” wrote another tweep. 

“There are influencers that [are] paid 60k to talk bad about MacG? That’s insane.”

‘PODCAST AND CHILL’ SUCCESS

Although MacG’s 2021 was filled with controversies, the podcast did celebrate a few wins. The podcast hit over 400 000 subscribers and became one of the biggest podcasts in the country. 

He interviewed some of the biggest celebrities in South Africa including actors Israel Zulu, Sello Maake ka Ncube, DJ Fresh and actress Natasha Thahane. 

MacG was also selected as part of YouTube’s 2021 Black Voices Creator class alongside Lasizwe Dambuza, Kay Yarms and Thato Rampedi.
