Andre De Ruyter may be unemployed after being booted from Eskom, but the controversial former CEO is laughing all the way to the bank. This after his bombshell brook called Truth to Power: My Three Years Inside Eskom flew off the shelves in its first week of release.

Two weeks ago, the brazen ex-energy head released a memoir detailing the widespread corruption and maladministration of the utility giant.

According to publishers Penguin Random House, Andre’s book set a record in its first week of sales.

The publishers told News24, that they had sold 16 444 copies in its first week, breaking the record set by Jacques Pauw’s The President’s Keepers.

Meanwhile, a PDF version of the book is doing the rounds on social media. However, authorities are warning that anyone found sharing it is breaking the law.

According to News24, just days after its top-secret release, a bootleg edition found its way online. In the wake of the piracy, publishers Penguin Random House issued a strong-worded media statement about the illegal distribution of the book.

It said: “Penguin Random House is appalled by the illegal distribution of a pirated PDF of Truth to Power by André de Ruyter, which is being disseminated on WhatsApp Messenger. The distribution of pirated copies infringes our copyright as well as that of the author, and it is unlawful in terms of the Copyright Act of 1976″.

It continued: “We wish to make clear to the public that the only way to obtain an ebook legally is to buy it from an ebook retailer or to borrow it from an authorised ebook library.

“Any copying or distribution of a pirated ebook, or any forwarding of a link to the pirated ebook, is unlawful. We will take legal action against individuals who are circulating pirated copies, which may include criminal complaints once we have collected all the necessary information.”

Meanwhile, Andre responded to news of the illegal distribution. He said in a statement: “It seems in South Africa anything related to Eskom is prone to being stolen.”
