English actress Emma Thompson opened up about going nude at the age of 62 for her new film Good Luck to You, Leo Grande – which released at the virtual Sundance Film Festival on Saturday 22 January.
EMMA THOMPSON ON GOING NUDE AT 62: ‘IT’S VERY CHALLENGING’
The 62-year-old actress opened up about how she felt rehearsing and shooting nude scenes ate her age — for her new film Good Luck to You, Leo Grande. This was Emma’s first time doing a full frontal on set.
Emma said that going nude at her age was very challenging but she does not think she could have done it before the age she is.
“It’s very challenging to be nude at 62. I don’t think I could’ve done it before the age that I am,” she said. This was in reference to a scene that sees her drop her bath robe in front of a mirror to reveal her full form, according to Entertainment Weekly.
“And yet, of course, the age that I am makes it extremely challenging because we aren’t used to seeing untreated bodies on the screen,” she continued.

REHEARSALS FOR THE FILM WERE ‘IN THE NUDE’
There may have been a wave of women’s movements recently but Emma says the “dreadful demands” of women in her industry remain. Emma stars as a teacher who hires a sex worker to help her achieve her first orgasm in the film Good Luck to You, Leo Grande.
“Nothing has changed in the dreadful demands made upon women in the real world but also in acting. This thing of having to be thin is still the same as it ever was. And actually in some ways I think it’s worse now,” she added.
Emma also shared that she and her co-star Daryl McCormack rehearsed in the nude for the film. Good Luck to You, Leo Grande director Sophie Hyde also disrobbed.
“Sophie, Daryl, and I rehearsed entirely nude and talked about our bodies. Talked about our relationship with our bodies, drew them, discussed the things that we find difficult about, things we like about them, described one another’s bodies,” she said during a cinema cafe discussion.
