Close friends and family gathered on Friday 11 March to bid farewell to South African hip-hop star Boitumelo Athiel Mooi, popularly known as DJ Dimplez, at a private funeral service. The DJ passed away on Sunday 6 March after a sudden brain haemorrhage. He was 40 years old.

Dimplez’s close friends and colleagues, including DJ Milkshake, DJ Speedsta and Reason, were all in attendance. The hip-hop DJ’s cousin, David Mooi, recalled the events of Saturday 5 March, the day he was admitted to hospital.

DAVID MOOI: ‘GOD HAS MADE A CALL’

David Mooi remembered DJ Dimplez as a “gentle giant” in his speech. Mooi said there has been pressure from the media to detail the hip-hop DJ’s passing.

“Tumi was admitted on that same evening [5 March] and when my uncle and the family arrived there, they saw Tumi, they couldn’t talk to him because of his condition.”

“The family were then told by the two doctors that have been examining Tumi that they’ve got bad news… Tumi is brain dead.

“When a person is like that, you’ll understand that God has made a call. Tumi passed on in the presence of family.”

DJ MILKSHAKE REMEMBERS DJ DIMPLEZ

DJ Milkshake, real name Kagiso Mabelane, and DJ Dimplez both grew up in Diepkloof, Soweto.

Milkshake recalled the moment a mutual friend alerted him and DJ Speedsta that Dimplez’s life support had been turned off.

“A friend of ours, who was with him when he passed, said to us: ‘They turned off his life-support at about 12:45’. Speedy looked at the time and said: ‘No, but Shake, it’s only 14:10, I mean the guy is just taking a nap, he’s going to wake up now. Let’s just give him a chance.’”

“I think that was such a strong testament to say that [Dimplez] was such a strong person and we knew we could always count on him, I think that’s something we should all take with us today.”
