‘Heartbroken, dumbstruck’: Celebs who hail from Ukraine speak on war

‘I can’t believe this is happening in the 21st century’, one celeb who hails from Ukraine, said of the Russian invasion in their homeland.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has been a hot topic for the past few weeks.

On the ground, ordinary civilians have taken up arms in a bid to protect the their freedom. But away from home, Ukrainians abroad – including celebrities who hail from the country – are also using their platform to bring about awareness and action.

FIVE CELEBS FROM UKRAINE SPEAK OUT ON WAR

MILLA JOVOVICH

The model and actress – whose roots are from both Ukraine and Russia shared a length Instagram post in which she stated that she was “torn”.

“I am heartbroken and dumbstruck trying to process the events of this week in my birthplace of Ukraine. My country and people being bombed. Friends and family in hiding. My blood and my roots come from both Russia and Ukraine. I am torn in two as I watch the horror unfolding, the country being destroyed, families being displaced, their whole life lying in charred fragments around them.

“I remember the war in my father’s homeland of former Yugoslavia and the stories my family tells of the trauma and terror they experienced. War. Always war. Leaders who cannot bring peace. The never ending juggernaut of imperialism. And always, the people pay in bloodshed and tears.”

OLGA KURYLENKO

The Bond actress also broke her silence on social media about her homeland.

She posted alongside a picture of prayer hand emojis: “Praying for Ukraine and the safety of its people. Please stop the war.”

MILA KUNIS

Whilst Mila herself has not yet spoken out publicly about the war, her husband Ashton Kutcher tweeted, “I stand with Ukraine.”

YARA ZAYA

The 90 Day Fiancé reality TV star claimed she had friends and family who were stranded in the country.

“I can’t believe this is happening in the 21st century. I’m scared now. It’s so scary that it’s hard to even breathe. I get calls from friends who are afraid, they hear bombs and do not know what to do. They dropping bombs starter at 4am when people are sleeping, this is crazy. I want to ask y’all , let’s pray for Ukraine please it’s so important now”.

WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO

The world famous boxer, and ex-husband of actress Hayden Panettierre, revealed his thoughts in an Instagram post.

He wrote: “Words are followed by missiles and tanks. Destruction and death come upon us. That’s it, blood will mix with tears.

We must face reality and have the courage to draw the conclusions for our future and that of our children. This is a blatant violation of international law. And, if you listen carefully, this war is also talking about Europe.”

“We will defend ourselves with all our might and fight for freedom and democracy. You can also act. Let not fear seize us; let’s not remain frozen. Putin shoots at Ukrainian cities, but he aims at our hearts and, more importantly, at our minds. He wants to create doubt and confusion and thus inaction.”
