The list of South African celebrities being investigated by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) in the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) fraud case keeps growing as kwaito star Arthur Mafokate is also fingered.

On Friday 13 January, the SIU revealed that it has obtained a preservation order to freeze properties valued at R53 million, one of which belongs to the 99 Music boss.

Mafokate’s La Villa Rosa guest house in Midrand was allegedly purchased with money he received from the NLC, which he applied for through his nonprofit organisation (NPO) called the SA Arts and Development Association (Saada).

According to the SIU, Mafokate’s NPO was meant to assist unemployed youth in the poor and rural areas of the country, to impact skills in music, business video, film production, dance and overall business of radio in SA.

The Mnike hitmaker’s house was seized along with properties belonging to former NLC employees. These include a former board member, a lawyer and the former chairperson and his wife.

Other assets include two luxury properties, a plot of land and a farm.

Investigations shows that SAADA applied for grant funding for R18.6 milion in 2013, but was approved for a little over R9 million.

When payment was made over two installments in 2014 and 2015, SAADA made transfers to Roadshow Marketing, a registered company where Mafokate is the sole director.

In November 2015, Roadshow Marketing transferred a R4.5 million home loan account and two months later, 999 Music, owned by Mafokate, signed an order to the purchase the R7.5 million property in Midrand.

According to City Press, the NLC received a tip off in the form of an affidavit written by Mafokate’s former manager Brian Mokoena at the Midrand Police Station in 2019.

Mafokate joins Tsotsi stars Terry Pheto and Presley Chweneyagae who are also being investigated.

In November 2022, Pheto’s Bryanston, Johannesburg, home was also seized by the SIU. However, the former Bold and the Beautiful actress denied the allegations.
