South African rapper Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, popularly known as AKA, lost the love of his life, Nelli Tembe exactly a year ago on 11 April 2021. Here’s a look at what the rapper’s year has been like since the death of his former fiancée.
AKA AND NELLI TEMBE’S TRAGIC LOVE STORY
AKA first confirmed that he was romantically linked to then 22-year-old Nelli Tembe in January 2020. This was when he first posted a snap of the chef, going “Instagram Official”.
The rapper proposed to Nelli in February 2021 and he visited her family in March 2021 for the traditional lobola negotiations. Lobola is the traditional “bridal wealth” paid by the man to the family of his wife-to-be in the form of livestock or other means.

APRIL 2021: AKA LOSES THE LOVE OF HIS LIFE
Unfortunately, just two weeks after the lobola negotiations, Nelli plunged to her death from the 10th floor of the Pepperclub Hotel in Cape Town. This was the start of a “challenging” year for the rapper.
All eyes were on AKA as many were questioning the details surrounding her death.
MAY 2021: ABUSE CLAIMS, CHEATING ALLEGATIONS AND THE ‘TELL-ALL’ INTERVIEW
A video of AKA breaking down a door to get to a traumatised Nelli was leaked on 9 May. This sparked speculation of abuse within the pair’s relationship.
MacG revealed that AKA was accused of cheating on Nelli with Da L.E.S’s “baby mama”Aurea Alexander – via a letter sent to him – on an episode of Podcast and Chill on 17 May.
- The rapper sat down with eNCA journalist Thembekile Mrototo on 22 May. The following was revealed in the interview,
- The couple was “fighting for hours” the weekend of her death.
- AKA was in the bathroom of their suite phoning hotel security when she allegedly jumped off the balcony at 07:00.
- The rapper then ran next door to his friend. Although Nelli was still breathing, AKA did not go downstairs to check on her.
- AKA denied that he is an abuser.
JULY 2021: THE RAPPER’S NAME ALLEGEDLY CLEARED
City Press reported that AKA’s name may have been cleared in the inquest into Nelli’s death following his tell-all interview. The inquest first looked at the young chef’s death as a murder but later as a suicide.
This comes after AKA detailed several times Nelli threatened to kill herself.

The rapper shared a tribute to Nelli on 11 August 2021 marking four months since her passing.
NOVEMBER 2021: THE RAPPER OPENS UP ABOUT DEPRESSION
The Composure hitmaker opened up about his battle with clinical depression in November 2021. He said he was put on anti-depressants but he stopped taking them because they made him numb and his job requires him to feel.
DECEMBER 2021: ROMANCE RUMOURS
The rapper sparked romance rumours with rapper Nadia Nakai in December 2021. This came after Tweeps thought the rapper gifted Nadia a Rolex. The pair were later suspected to have gone on a “baecation” together.
MARCH 2022: AKA AND NADIA NAKAI GO ‘INSTAGRAM OFFICIAL’
AKA and Nadia confirmed their romance by going “Instagram Official” in March 2021.
APRIL 2022: AKA AND NADIA NAKAI PACK ON THE PDA
This month the pair packed on the Public Display of Affection (PDA) when they made an appearance at Konka in Soweto on Sunday 3 April.
