Heche was in a coma since crashing her Mini Cooper into the Mar Vista house, resulting in  “structural compromise and… heavy fire” at the scene, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The ensuing blaze took 59 firefighters more than an hour to contain and fully extinguish, the department said in a statement.

Celebrity gossip outlet TMZ, citing unnamed police sources, said the actress had tested positive for cocaine and possibly fentanyl. The results follows reports that Heche was not under the influence of alcohol as initially suspected when she crashed her car.

Dating Ellen Degeneres

Heche found herself in the public eye for her high-profile relationship with talk show host Ellen DeGeneres from 1997 to 2000.

Heche spoke about her relationship with DeGeneres in an interview with Mr. Warburton magazine in August 2020, saying she was “part of a revolution that created social change, and I could not have done that without falling in love with her”.

In a 2021 YouTube interview, Perez Hilton asked Heche whether she ever reached out to Degeneres after their split.

“You know what, every day of my life I reached out to her,” the actress answered.

“I think that it was a very difficult thing for her to trust that I was a woman who could fall in love with a woman, without being gay.”
