The host of the hit talk show Rea Tsotella on the Moja Love channel on DStv, Bishop Makamu, recently broke his silence after an audio clip went viral in which he allegedly solicited sex from an unknown (presumably young) woman.

The audio clip – in which the woman calls him “daddy” — recently spread like wildfire on Twitter. Makamu, who can be heard speaking to the woman in Setswana, later voluntarily stepped down from his show while the investigation into the allegations gets underway.

Bishop Makamu speaks out

Now, the pastor from the Endless Hope Bible Church in Alberton spoke about the recording on the show Ama Bishop (aired 23 May 2021), saying that he was only asking for “church keys” and became “playful” in this context during the now-viral recording.

According to The Citizen, in the clip he can be heard asking a woman he refers to as “ngwanaka” [my child], to give him “something”. He also asks the woman: “Are you alone?” When she says she has no company, the bishop asks her: “Otlo mpha [Will you give me]?”

The woman says no in her response to Makamu, who begs for her to change her mind. She tells him she will “give him” on Sunday.

“Wa bhora, ngwanaka [You are boring, my child],” he told her.

On AmaBishop, Makamu claimed that he only asked the girl if she was alone because it would not look good for a church elder to walk into a schoolgirl’s room alone.

Makamu denies allegations

Makamu has denied the conversation was sexual. He also went on to ask for forgiveness from his wife during a church service this past Sunday, according to the publication mentioned above.

“I’m repeating what I said three years ago to my wife; I have sinned against heaven and I have sinned against you [wife]. Maybe I’m no longer worthy to be called your husband, with all humility, I’m repeating words I said three years ago,  I have sinned, please find it in your heart to forgive me,” he said.

Some publications report that the recording took place back in 2017.

Tweeps react

On Twitter, social media users shared their thoughts under the hashtag #Makamu, which quickly started to trend. Most social media users branded the pastor as a liar. What’s more, City Press also said that the woman in the audio has opened a case at the Midrand police station against the Endless Hope Bible Church.
