Not a fan: Nota backs Kelis, claims Beyonce ‘exploits black women’

Nota Baloyi had the Beyhive reeling after he accused Beyonce of ‘exploiting’ singer Kelis and other woman in her ‘Renaissance’ album.

Renaissance has officially dropped, and music lovers – particularly fans of Beyonce – are in their element. But not everyone is happy or celebrating Bey’s latest drop.

Following the release on Thursday 28 July, fellow singer Kelis called Beyonce out for sampling her music without her consent.

KELIS CALLS OUT BEYONCE

Hot on the heels of Beyonce’s Renaissance release, a fan account praised the singer for “collaborating” with Kelis. This, after Bey sampled the latter’s 1999 single Get Along With You in her track Energy.

But Kelis rubbished the claims, slamming Beyonce, and producers Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo.

Responding on Instagram, Kelis posted in the comments section: “My mind is blown too because the level of disrespect and utter ignorance of all 3 parties involved is astounding. I heard about this the same way everyone else did. Nothing is ever as it seems, some of the people in this business have no soul or integrity and they have everyone fooled”.

Kelis added that her annoyance was due to the lack of “decency and common sense” on the part of Beyonce.

She added in an Instagram video post: “It’s not about me being jealous. Jealous of someone using my song? That’s the dumbest, most ignorant thing I’ve ever heard. It has to do with the fact that, from one artist to another, you should have the decency and common sense and the courtesy to call.”

“There’s no working together if you are not even checking to see if everything’s cool…That’s a problem.”

NOTA HAS HIS SAY

Closer to home, South African rapper Nota Baloyi also had his say about Beyonce and her album Renaissance.

In one tweet, the controversial music commentator called out the singer for “stifling black women”.

He tweeted: “Beyonce uses the support of the gay community to make up for stifling the careers of other black women in the industry… How many black women have had their music careers cut short or whose course was shortened to make way for the queen? It’s overdue, finally Kelis calls her out!”

In Renaissance, Beyonce collaborates with LGBTQ icons Big Freedia and Honey Dijon. She also dedicated the album to her late “fabulous” gay uncle Johnny.

Nota goes on to claim he was not impressed by Renaissance.

He added: “There isn’t a good song on this Beyonce album… The only thing worse than this is that Drake House album. Let me play Tems EP instead!”
