Zulu king Misuzulu ka Zwelithini has officially been crowned the Zulu king following his coronation on Saturday, and South Africans on social media are tweeting their best wishes to the new monarch.

With plenty of pomp and prestige, the heir of the late Goodwill Zwelithini entered the sacred kraal in KwaKhangelamankengane Palace, Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal.

The traditional ceremony marks the steps taken in crowning a new king.

Wearing the hide of a lion, Misuzulu invoked the spirit of his ancestors as he ascended the throne.

But despite the day’s celebrations, Misuzulu – the son of the late Queen Mantfombi Dlamini Zulu, who was the sister of Swaziland’s King Mswati III – has been challenged by a number of his siblings as the rightful heir to the throne.

Whilst his father King Goodwill Zwelithini named him as his successor, the members of the royal family became embroiled in a bitter feud in the last year, contesting the title of Zulu king.

King Zwelethini had six wives and 28 children. According to BBC, Queen Mantfombi Dlamini’s marriage to the Zulu king as his third wife, came with the condition that her first-born son would be first in line for the throne following his death.

However, amid Saturday’s proceedings, two daughters of the late king even attempted to stop the traditional ceremony. This, after seeking an urgent high court application, reported enCA.

In his official address, Misuzulu did his best to calm the storm surrounding his coronation.

Addressing the crowd, he said: “Where we have been as Zulu’s, and the pain we have experienced – today God and the ancestors, the owners of the throne – I bless that they comfort us today as we start a new chapter.”

Whilst some South Africans have been split on who the rightful heir of the throne is, others took to social media to heap praise on the Zulu monarch.

And in the well-wishers, were some of Mzansi’s biggest stars.
