Sol Phenduka shared his experience of an incident that no South African wants to go through – getting scammed at the ATM.

The Kaya FM presenter also revealed how he cleverly put a halt to thieves who wanted access to his money.

On Twitter, Sol Phenduka tweeted on Friday afternoon: “Card swallowed by ATM. The guy who was using just before me is suddenly behind me, and he is next in line to use ATM after me.

The Podcast and Chill cohost confidently added: “Tried the wrong person”.

Elaborating, Sol continued “Never leave the ATM. That’s why apps are important. No calling. You block card while standing there”

Sol’s followers also shared their tips when withdrawing money at the ATM.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR BANK CARDS SAFE

The bad news is that no one is exempt from ATM and card theft. The good news is that you can take measures to protect yourself and your money.

Here are a few tips for keeping your bank cards safe.

  • Memorise your pins and never share them with anyone, including banking staff
  • Check your bank statements regularly 
  • Report lost or stolen cards immediately
  • Don’t accept help from strangers when withdrawing cash.
  • Avoid using your card on suspicious websites or apps
  • Never click on suspicious links sent to you
  • Never let your bank cards out of your sight during transactions at pay points
  • Do not use an ATM or pay point that looks like it has been tampered with
  • Report suspicious activity to your banks
