Archbishop Desmond Tutu passed away on Sunday 26 December in Cape Town at the age of 90. Tutu was the last surviving South African laureate of the Nobel Peace Prize and tributes have been pouring in from several South African and international celebrities.

ARCHBISHOP DESMOND TUTU’S PASSING 

The Presidency confirmed the news of Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s passing on Sunday 26 December. 

President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his condolences to the Tutu family in a statement noting that Archbishop Tutu’s passing is “another chapter of bereavement in our nation’s farewell to a generation of outstanding South Africans who have bequeathed us a liberated South Africa.” 

“Desmond Tutu was a patriot without equal; a leader of principle and pagmatisim who gave meaning to the biblical insight that faith without works is dead,” wrote Ramaphosa.  

MZANSI CELEBS REMEMBER ARCHBISHOP TUTU 

Several Mzansi celebrities took to social media to remember Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s remarkable impact on South Africa through his powerful activism.

Idols SA judge Unathi Nkayi posted an image next to Archbishop Tutu’s wax figure at Madame Tussauds in London as a young child, remembering his sweet personality. 

“What a wonderful beacon of hope and JOY for many of us during trying times. In eternal peace we pray that you shall rest,” wrote Nkayi.  

South African composer Lebo M wrote: “Some losses are much heavier than others in these difficult times, we shed a tear of both sadness and joy. Blessed have had many special moments with The Arch.” 

“Thank you for [what] you have done for the growth of our beloved country and it’s people”, wrote gospel singer Dumi Mkokstad. 

“Lala Ngoxolo,” wrote Springbok captain Siya Kolisi.

INTERNATIONAL TRIBUTES

High-profile figures in the United States, including Barack Obama, joined South Africans in bidding farewell to Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

American actress Kerry Washington posted an image of Archbishop Tutu remembering him with one of his powerful quotes. 

CNN anchor Jim Acosta looked back At interviewing the Archbishop as a young journalist. 

Martin Luther King Jr’s daughter Bernice King wrote: “I’m grateful to God for Archbishop Desmond Tutu. What a vessel of truth, grace, love, and justice.”
