TIKTOK TREND GOES HORRIBLY WRONG

The viral Tik Tok trend sees users recording their family members’ reactions to news their favourite celebrities are no more. In 16-year-old Slater’s video — which he has since deleted — he tells his parents that his mother’s Black Panther co-star Michael B. Jordan had died.

The video showed a shocked and emotional Bassett walking toward her son to see the fake news on his phone.

“This trend is very stupid but most of the time it’s just a cringe random kid telling their mom that a person they’ve never met died. This is something different. This is telling your mom their friend died. Just cruel. That app kills brain cells, people don’t think,” one Tweep reacted.

While another tweet said: “How could he do that to her, especially after she lost Chadwick. Like nothing about this is funny, it’s just cruel.”

SLATER’S APOLOGY

After heavy backlash, Slater released an apology video.

The tearful teen apologises to the A Journal For Jordan actor and his family and fans for the distasteful and disrespectful joke.

I would sincerely like to apologize to Michael B. Jordan’s entire family, his extended family, and him directly as he is an idol of mine,” Slater said, in tears.

Taking part in a trend like this is completely disrespectful. I don’t wish any bad ramifications…of my actions upon his family nor my parents as they deserve none of the backlash.”

“I own this was a mistake. I hope this can be a teaching lesson to anyone who uses social media as a tool and a source of entertainment to truly understand that your actions can have consequences that extend beyond you,” Slater added.
