American actress Amandla Stenberg recently faced a lot of online backlash for the way she pronounces her South African Xhosa name. The young star was accused of being “lazy” to learn how to correctly pronounce the African name while her parents were accused of misappropriating it.

Amandla, who evidently took note of the backlash, has since headed online to share clips of herself learning how to say both her name and the word Xhosa the same way South Africans do.

The Hate U Give star Amandla Stenberg has been pressured into learning how to pronounce her name the way South Africans do after they started dragging her on social media for “butchering” it.

The star went viral last week after she was heard mispronouncing the word Xhosa during an interview.

According to many of the local TikTokers who watched the video, she was also mispronouncing her name which means “Power” in Xhosa.

It appears she may have seen some of their criticism and decided to learn how to say the name in a manner that South Africans would approve of.

“Pretty lady it’s your name. South Africans didn’t have to bully you into pronouncing it in a perfect African accent when their own kids pronounce their African names in English accents”

@McFumbata said:

“No, she only learned it after an outcry by South Africans coz she too couldn’t pronounce it, understandably she didn’t grow up in SA.”
