‘Looking forward to police report’: Nelli Tembe’s father yet to find closure

The tragic death of rapper AKA’s fiancée Anele ‘Nelli’ Tembe’s in April shocked Mzansi. Here’s what her father has to say about the police investigation and the Tembe family.

The Tembe family was left devastated after the death of their daughter Anele on April 11. She fell to her death at the Pepperclub Hotel in Cape Town where she was staying with her fiancé, rapper Kiernan Forbes, popularly known as AKA.

The couple were in Cape Town at the time for one of AKA’s performances. 


City Press spoke to Nelli’s father Moses about finding closure. He mentioned that the family is being patient with the legal system and that they are awaiting more information from the police. 

We aren’t involved in that side of the process. It’s something we’d like to leave to the police, who are following their processes. We look forward to receiving their reports. We don’t believe we should interfere or rush them. They need time to investigate thoroughly.

Moses Tembe spoke briefly about his current relationship with AKA after the two had exchanged words through official statements. Tembe mentioned that AKA is continuing with his life just like the family continues their process of healing. 

He further mentioned that AKA’s father has been in contact with him and they have shared words of encouragement with one another and said, “there is nothing to reconcile”.

AKA addressed allegations of abuse in his sit-down interview with eNCA journalist Thembekile Mrototo after News24 released graphic images of an incident in which the rapper breaking down a door in attempts to get into a room where Nelli was reportedly hiding from him.

He emphasised that he had never abused her in their relationship, saying he treated Anele “like gold”.

The Fela in Versace rapper described his relationship with Anele as “passionate”, adding that they had a “tumultuous relationship”.

Moses Tembe continued to mention that he was deeply affected by AKA’s remarks in the interview.

“I watched the interview, it was an emotional issue, not really about Kiernan, but every time the name of my daughter is mentioned, even if it’s for encouragement, it evokes feelings.”

He continued to say the family is still heartbroken, but they remain strong.

Moses Tembe revealed that the family is currently in the process of setting up the Anele Tembe Foundation in Nelli’s memory. The foundation is not operational yet, as the family is still finalising the legalities around it.
