Charlize Theron has highlighted another unfortunate incident of gun violence – and this time, it’s an incident from her home country: the death of South African rapper AKA.

The muso – real name Kiernan Forbes – was shot and killed by unknown hitmen on Friday night outside a Florida Road hotspot in Durban.

But the Benoni-born actress has faced the wrath of angry fans, who’ve criticised her for her “selective activism.”

CHARLIZE PAYS TRIBUTE TO AKA

In a tribute posted on her Instagram account a day after AKA’s death, Charlize Theron shared: “Absolutely heartbroken to hear about the passing of @akaworldwide. Another beautiful life cut short by a senseless act of gun violence.

She added: “Sending peace and love to Kiernan’s family. Rest in power”.

Charlize Theron’s activism on gun violence is a well-documented one.

The Hollywood star has been open about her childhood in SA and of how her mother, Gerda, shot and killed her abusive father. The mother and duo moved to the US shortly after that.

Since then, she’s been campaigning to limit public access to guns.

She told the Global Education and Skills Forum in 2018: “I have a very personal experience with gun violence. I lost my father to gun violence. I just don’t understand the argument when people try to say the fix is more guns. It is so outrageous to me”.

FANS ARE NOT HAPPY

Charlize Theron – who courted controversy last year over her comments about the Afrikaans language – was dragged in the comment section of her post.

Many fans questioned why the actress did not advocate for other violent crimes like farm murders.

Gerrytacker: “So funny one artist gets shot, and it’s a tragedy, yet white farmers are being slaughtered wholesale in that country.”

Valerie173m: “75 people get killed in South Africa per day. 525 per week, this is more than any war zone worldwide. Farmers are being slaughtered in their homes. May they all RIP. This is not due to gun violence. Guns don’t kill people, but through pure criminality & their utter disrespect for human life”.

Others mentioned Nelli Tembe, AKA’s late fiancee, whom he was rumoured to have abused throughout their relationship.

Atashapelatiauthor: “And to his fiance who was beaten up and abused, rest in power

And some questioned why she had not mentioned other tragedys like the earthquake in Turkey and Syria, which had killed close to 30 0000.

Muzun: “You have a big fan in Turkey. We were expecting a condolence from you.”

Some claimed Charlize’s post was “hypocritical,” given her previous acting roles…

Brianw562: “Odd that YOU would call it ‘gun violence’ though. You’ve made a lot of money portraying ‘gun violence’ in movies.

And then some stated that Charlize Theron had no clue about what really happened to AKA on the night he died…

Michellelewandowsky: “Ag, please, you have no clue what goes on in our country. How many people speak Afrikaans etc.? This is not GUN violence – it’s targeted. He was obviously into something he should not have been”.
