On Friday 10 February, South African rapper Kiernan “AKA” Jarryd Forbes lost his life after he was gunned down outside Wish restaurant in Durban. In the hours leading up to his death, the rapper had shared all of his locations – something many believe was an extremely dangerous thing to do.

It has recently come to light, however, that the Congratulate Me hitmaker was actually trying to do a good deed by keeping people in the loop about the places he was visiting.

AKAs location sharing worries many

AKA’s passing has shocked his millions of fans. The rapper was shot execution-style in what police have confirmed was an assassination while leaving a Durban restaurant where he had been dining with industry friends.

Throughout the day, the 35-year-old kept his followers updated on his whereabouts by tagging each of his locations. He had visited a gym, barbershop and then later Wish restaurant while sharing that he would be performing at Yugo Club later that night. Unfortunately, he never made it for the performance.

After noticing that the star had shared all his locations online, many locals pointed out that it was both reckless and dangerous — mainly because he is a high-profile celebrity.

Here’s why he did it

According to AKA’s close friend and owner of the barbershop and Wish restaurant, Philani Kweyama, the rapper had a reason behind all his live videos and location tagging.

Speaking to TimesLive, Philani – who was with AKA before he died – explained that the rapper had called him earlier in the day and promised to promote his businesses.

“He called me earlier in the day and said, ‘Benni I know you got a new spot, let’s go check it out. I want to go cut my hair at your place. I keep hearing about the food and the fish at your place, I want to come eat at your place. Benni, don’t worry, today I’m going to promote your business, I’m going to post’.

Philani went on to add that AKA just wanted to support local businesses and Durban as a whole.

“That’s why if you look at it he was all like that. He was there to support all of us, he was there to support Durban,” he reportedly said during an eNCA live broadcast.
