The 2022 BET Awards on Sunday 26 June were filled with excitement, stellar performances and a few surprising appearances… Grammy-winning rapper Kanye West made a special appearance at the Los Angeles Microsoft Theatre to honour Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, hip-hop icon and record label owner, Sean “Diddy” Combs.
In his speech to Diddy, Kanye West joked about his divorce from businesswoman and reality star Kim Kardashian. The pair finalised their divorce on 2 March after Judge Steve Cochran declared Kim Kardashian “legally single”.
As per BET, the BET Awards’ Lifetime Achievement Award recognises “industry giants” who have shaped culture and become “transformative leaders” who have inspired generations throughout their careers.
The likes of Gladys Knight, Diana Ross, Whitney Houston, Prince, Samuel L Jackson, Queen Latifah and Mary J Blige have all received the BET Lifetime Achievement Award.
Highlighting some of Diddy’s achievements in the music industry, BET highlights that the hip-hop legend is also a “true showman”.
Honouring his fellow hip-hop colleague at the BET Awards, Kanye West praised Diddy as his “favourite artist” adding that although there were “so many rules” in hip-hop, Diddy “broke all of them”.
In his speech, the Hurricane hitmaker also poked fun at his divorce from Kim Kardashian.
“[He] broke down all the doors and understood contracts in a way a lot of us still don’t. Understood money in a way a lot of us still don’t. I go to him for advice to this day,” said Ye.
“He inspired so many of my choices. So many of my life choices, my wife’s choices…And here we are. Thanks for that Puff.”
Accepting his Lifetime Achievement Award, Diddy said the day was “not about him” but about his mother, Janice Combs.
“My mom was working like three jobs. She was helping cerebral palsy patients at night. Getting up and being a bus driver then going to work at a clothing store. I don’t even know when she slept,” said the 52-year-old icon.
