’13 Reasons Why’ actor Tommy Dorfman comes out as transgender
Tommy Dorfman opened up about the ‘evolution of Tommy’ into a transgender woman during a recent interview with Time magazine.

Tommy Dorfman, best known for the role Ryan Shaver on Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, has announced the news that he is transgender on social media and in a formal interview with Time magazine on 22 July.
‘TODAY IS ABOUT CLARITY, I AM A TRANS WOMAN’
The 29-year-old sat down with Time magazine to discuss her life as a transgender woman.
She mentioned the funny part about coming out is that she hasn’t gone anywhere.
“Coming out is always viewed as this grand reveal, but I was never not out. Today is about clarity: I am a trans woman. My pronouns are she/her. My name is Tommy.”
Tommy posted a stunning image on her Instagram page penning that she is grateful for every trans person who has walked the same path, broken boundaries and risked their lives to live as their true selves.
TOMMY ON TRANSITIONING
Tommy notes transitioning as something beautiful. She mentions that her Instagram serves as a look back on her journey through her transition.
She has learnt that refusing to clarify her identity as a public figure can rob her of the opportunity to control her own narrative.
“So, recently I looked to examples of others who have come out as trans. There’s the version I couldn’t really afford to do, which is to disappear for two years and come back with a new name, new face and new body. But that’s not what I wanted.”
Tommy is adamant about not changing her name because she was named after her uncle who passed away shortly after she was born. She feels completely connected to the name Tommy.
“This is an evolution of Tommy. I’m becoming more Tommy.”
TOMMY DORFMAN TAKES THE WORLD
The actress is grateful to have received her first role as a trans woman from Lena Dunham last year. She will feature in Dunham’s film Sharp Stick.
“I’m thinking about how I can infuse my trans body into film and television.”
Tommy also explained that it’s wild to be 29 and going through puberty all over again and as a result, she seeks different romantic connections.
She was in a nine-year relationship with a gay man but is working on redefining their relationship as friends.
