You’ve heard of cheese boards, charcuterie boards, and dessert boards, but we bet you hadn’t thought you’d see the rise of butter boards. Yes, butter, on a board. Still confused?

FOOD TREND ALERT

To make a butter board, room temperature butter is spread over a wooden board and topped with anything from florals to lemon zest. There are no limitations to the toppings and edible decorations you can add to your board. Anything goes. Salt, pepper, chilli flakes, honey, sugar syrup, lemon zest, fruit or vegetable slices, herbs or edible flowers are only some of the ingredients people use across the globe for their creations, most of which they share on TikTok.

With over 350 million videos and counting on TikTok, you can be forgiven for thinking everyone is making butter boards. There are nonbelievers too.
While many feel this is a brilliant hack for catering to groups of people, others claim butter boards are unhygienic and some say they’re a waste of money.

For various reasons, Cook and fitness fanatic Hintekani Ndinisa warned that those hoping on the trend exercise caution.

“I must say, this is a really cool hack. Aesthetically it is pleasant. There is everything to love about a drool-worthy butter board but I would, without sounding like a joy killer, remind folks about a few things,” she said.

  • Hygiene first – Hintekani said when serving butter boards at gatherings where multiple people are sharing, provide the necessary cutlery to avoid double dipping.
