If you’ve been unpleasantly surprised by the cost of your favourite snack – Pringles – you’re not alone.

The popular potato chips – manufactured by Kellogg’s – are currently priced at R40 in most retail shops. But like many other items, consumers are complaining about the price hike.

PRINGLES PRICE GETS ANGRY COMMENTS

On Twitter, the price of Pringles has been a bitter pill to swallow.

One tweep – who posted a pic of dozens of cans priced at the “value” cost of R39,99, had South African consumers riled up.

The tweep posted: “This is how I know our economic situation has gone to the dogs. These used to be R19.99 not so long ago”.

And many were in agreement:

@Zenande_lo: “These were R22/24.99 at PnP just last year!”

@S_Lutho: “And this is supposed to be on sale?”

@JameelaHarris: “I remember being able to get 3 for R60 at Checkers not too long ago”

WHY ARE THEY SO EXPENSIVE?

According to The Cold Wire, factors like the ingredients used to make Pringles and their packaging tend to make them more expensive.

  • Packaging of the product – a tube and not a packet
  • Shortage of potatoes around the world
  • The drought affecting rice farming (Pringles are made from the combination of both potatoes and rice)
  • Shortage of rice exports from India
  • Costs of ingredients like spices, cheese, and even fertilizer used to grow potatoes and rice
