Cape Town residents are only just recovering from the recent heatwave that brought them “the hottest day of the year”. It appears that they won’t be packing away their fans – or their beach towels – any time soon as temperatures are once again set to rise for certain parts of the Western Cape.

Western Cape temperatures set to rise – AGAIN

Western Cape beaches were packed to full capacity in January this year as temperatures soared to an unbelievable 39 degrees in some areas.

February – which is known for being one of South Africa’s hottest months – is about to live up to its reputation, especially for Western Cape residents.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) shared that temperatures in certain parts of the province will be going as high as 37 degrees on Thursday 17 February.

Hot spots: Vredendal, Clanwilliam, Malmesbury and Worcester

The areas affected by the sudden rise in temperatures are Vredendal, which will see a high of 36 degrees, Clanwilliam which will peak at 37 degrees, Malmesbury will reach a high of 35 degrees, and Worcester a high 32 degrees.

Temperatures will, however, remain relatively cool along the Cape coast which is forecast at 31-degrees, Cape Town ETC reports.

Staying safe

While it isn’t exactly classified as a heatwave, residents are advised to stay safe at all times. Here are some tips on how to do beat the heat:

BEAT THE WESTERN CAPE HEAT BY DRESSING APPROPRIATELY

Wear clothes that are light and airy. Avoid dark colours and heavy sleeves. Opt for UV-protective and moisture-wicking clothing that help your body sweat and protect you from sunburn.

STAY HYDRATED AT ALL TIMES

We all know that drinking water is very important. During a heatwave, it becomes even more crucial that you keep your body hydrated at all times.

That means to drink up even when you’re not particularly parched. It’s also good to note that drinking sugary drinks like cold-drink and juices are not advised because they make you lose fluids.

AVOID TOO PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
Be careful not to over-exert yourself especially when the temperature is at its peak. If you have no choice but to physically work during a heatwave, be sure to take frequent breaks in some shade.

Pay attention to your breathing and heart rate, if you feel light-headed, dizzy, or confused, be sure to stop whatever you’re doing and take some time to cool off.
