‘WAITER FIRED’   

Waiters don’t make the most money in the world, so when they receive a tip from R124 000, R94 000, R75 000 to R20 000 you’re letting them know that their service is appreciated.  

Ryan Brandt, a waitress in the US, told KNWA that she and another waitress were catering to a group of over 40 people at a local restaurant, where she had been working for over three years. By the end of the meal, they received a total of $4,400 (R75 000) for both of them.   

But her happiness quickly turned to disappointment after she was told by management that she had to share her tip with other staff at the restaurant where she worked.   

Brandt says this has never happened in all the years she has worked there.  

When one of the customers, Grant Wise, who was part of the 40-person party, discovered this, he asked for a refund on the tip and instead gave it to Brandt outside of the restaurant. Wise only wanted to tip the servers who had waited at his table   

However, Brandt was then devastated when she was fired and she believes it is because of this interaction.  

“I was told that I was going to be giving my cash over to my shift manager, and I would be taking home 20%,” says Brandt.   

“It was devastating, I borrowed a significant amount for student loans. Most of them were turned off because of the pandemic but they’re turning back on in January and that’s a harsh reality,” says Brandt.

LIST OF GENEROUS TIPS  

R124 000  

Earlier this year someone spent R1 374 945 on mostly booze at 012 Lifestyle Brooklyn, which is in Brooklyn Mall in Pretoria. According to the Facebook user who shared the picture of the receipt, the patron was at the club for less than six hours and tipped the waiter who served them R124 000.  

R94 000  

American actress and filmmaker Marcia Kimpton left a massive tip of R94 486 after she and a group of 15 dined at Delfino’s Restaurant in Mossel Bay back in November 2021.  

The waiter, Zathan McCarthy, told the Mossel Bay Advertiser that he would be sharing his tip with his colleagues.  

R20 000  

Back in September, a waiter got a tip of almost R20 000 when a man recently racked up a whopping bill of more than R200 000 at a Cape Town restaurant.  

This happened on Spring Day at The Milk Restaurant and Bar, a lifestyle and entertainment boutique located at the heart of Khayelitsha.
