Pieter-Dirk Uys and Tannie Evita

Since the days of apartheid up until this very day, his alter ego Evita Bezuidenhout — which was created by Uys in 1978 — has become a “farce” to be reckoned with, to be hailed and celebrated as arguably one of the most famous white women in South Africa.

Testament to her fame is the Living Legacy Award from the Women’s International Center for her “contribution to the place of women in the last century”.

In 1996, Tannie Evita made her home in Darling at Evita se Perron alongside the train tracks running through the Swartland town.

Read ‘One-Man Shows: The Black and White Years’ for free

The 76-year-old Pieter-Dirk Uys’s latest book, One-Man Shows: The Black and White Years, includes the complete texts of 25 of his plays, as well as the first volume collection of one-man shows. These play texts and one-man shows are presented free to all who wish to download and read them.

According to Uys, this is because so many students have requested access to these texts for the purpose of study and other educational use. However, all the plays and one-man shows are strictly protected by copyright and applications for performance rights, both professional and amateur, should be addressed to: productions@evita.co.za

It can be enjoyed on a laptop with Uys saying “no doubt ring some dusty rusty RSA bells!”
