Matric 2021: So you’ve passed…exactly what will your results mean?

More than 800 000 learners wrote their matric exams in November 2021 and if you are one of them, you will be able to access your individual results online on Thursday 20 January after the overall results have been announced by the Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga. 

If you are uncertain about what exactly your results mean, here is a handy guide.

INTERPRETING YOUR MATRIC RESULTS

LEVEL SYSTEM 

Your matric results will be graded through a level system. 

Level 7: 80-100% (Outstanding achievement)

Level 6: 70-70% (Meritorious achievement)

Level 5: 60-69% (Substantial achievement)

Level 4: 50-59% (Moderate achievement)

Level 3: 40-49% (Adequate achievement)

Level 2: 30-39% (Elementary achievement)

Level 1: 0-29% (Not achieved – Fail) 

HIGHER CERTIFICATE PASS REQUIREMENTS 

To obtain entry into a higher certificate programme at a higher education institution, the matric pupil must pass six out of seven subjects and meet the following criteria: 

  • 40% in your Home Language (Level 3)
  • 40% in two other subjects (Level 3)
  • 30% in four other subjects (Level 2)

DIPLOMA PASS REQUIREMENTS 

To obtain entry into a diploma programme at a higher education institution, the matriculant must pass six out of seven subjects and meet the following criteria:

  • 40% in your Home Language (Level 3)
  • 40% for three other subjects (Level 3) (excluding Life Orientation)
  • 30% in the language of learning and teaching at a higher education institution (Level 2)

BACHELORS DEGREE PASS REQUIREMENTS 

To obtain entry into a Bachelors Degree programme, the matriculant must pass six out of seven subjects and meet the following criteria: 

  • 40% in your Home Language (Level 3) (This is compulsory) 
  • 50% for four other subjects (Level 4) (Excluding Life Orientation) 
  • 30% for one other subject (Level 2)
