After a young crossed Malinois dog named Kei was hailed a hero after she was shot while saving her adopted family in a horrific house invasion in Benoni, her family and other citizens are calling on the public for support.

Saving Kei | Funds raised for heroic dog

Sarah Lamont has set up a crowdfund on BackaBuddy to raise the funds needed to cover the surgery and additional medical costs (which could reach an estimated R60 000) after Kei was shot in the face.

Kei made headlines after two armed robbers broke into the Lamont home in Lakefield Benoni on 3 October.

While the family was asleep, one intruder entered the main bedroom where a terrifying shoot out took place, and he was reportedly shot dead. The second intruder entered the couple’s eldest daughter’s bedroom not knowing that Kei was also on the bed, watching over her best friend.

Kei sensed that there was something wrong and attacked before the intruder could get through the door.

“The intruder retreated back into the hall and down the stairs leaving a trail of blood behind him,” Sarah writes. “As he was fleeing, he shot and killed the family’s Biewer Yorkie Holly who, as small as what she was, gave her life to protect her family.”

Kei chased the intruder down the stairs and into the kitchen where he opened fire and shot her in the face before he escaped.

“Kei knew she had to get help and, despite her injuries, made her way out the gate to alert a neighbour she knew well. Surveillance footage shows her pacing up and down the gate trying to get help. She couldn’t bark because one of the bullets had shattered her jaw. With no luck, she ran down to the lake, a place she’s familiar with, looking for help.”

When the Lamont family found her, they contacted the Boksburg SPCA.

“Kei was x-rayed. It was found that the bullet had entered the side of her nose, shattered two top mollars, severely injured her tongue and broken her jaw. Surgery was done a little later to repair the tongue and bullet wounds.”

She is currently being tube fed and has to be medicated every three to four hours.

“She has been such a superstar through her recovery process and sits there as good as gold and obediently while being nursed.”

Once it is certain that there’s no shrapnel left in the jaw bone, they can proceed with the reconstructive surgery which will obviously carry additional costs. You can read more about donations for Kei over here.
