In victory for Johnny Depp, the jury has awarded him $15 million dollars in compensatory and punitive damages against his ex-wife Amber Heard.

Heard was awarded $2 million dollars in in compensatory damages and no money for punitive damages. The jury found that her statements about Heard’s marriage with Depp were false and conveyed a “defamatory implication” to people other than her former husband.

The jury began their deliberations last week, after six weeks of testimony. Actress Ellen Barkin, who was involved with Depp, testified on Heard’s behalf during the trial as well as a number of former Depp associates.

Kate Moss, who dated Depp, also took the stand, testifying that he never abused her, contradicting a claim made by Heard. During trial, Heard claimed to have heard rumours about Depp pushing her down a flight of stairs. Moss told the court that he was never violent with her and once came to her aid after she fell down the stairs.

“As I left the room, I slid down the stairs and I hurt my back. And I screamed because I didn’t know what happened to me and I was in pain. He came running back to help me and carried me to my room and got me medical attention,” Moss said.

Johnny Depp had filed a lawsuit against Amber Heard over an op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post in 2018. In the op-ed, Heard claimed to have been a victim of domestic abuse, but did not name Depp. The 58-year-old Charlie and the Chocolate Factory actor subsequently sued his ex-wife for $50 million. Heard then countersued for $100 million, claiming she had been defamed by statements made by Depp’s lawyer, Adam Waldman.

During the six-week trial, a number of witnesses took the stand to testify about the couple’s tumultuous marriage. Heard told the court that Depp physically or sexually assaulted her more than a dozen times. During his testimony, Depp testified that he never struck Heard, that she concocted the abuse allegations, and that she was the one who physically attacked him, multiple times.
