A St Albans Correctional facility prisoner, in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, is in hot water after his trendy and “flamboyant” images started doing the rounds on social media this week.

In a media statement by the spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Services, Singabakho Nxumalo, on Wednesday 27 September, the inmate’s cellphone has been confiscated and an investigation will be launched.

FASHIONABLE PRISONER’S PHONE CONFISCATED

According to Nxumalo, the prisoner — who was not named — has been moved to a Special Care Unit for the purposes of the investigation.

“The Department of Correctional Services has confiscated a mobile phone used by an inmate to flamboyantly post his image on social media.

“The identified inmate is incarcerated at St Albans Correctional facility in the Eastern Cape Region and he has been moved to a Special Care Unit for the purposes of an investigation and will be formally charged,” Nxumalo said.

He further emphasised that inmates are not allowed to have phones in prison, saying illegal access and usage is a punishable offence.

“The said inmate will also face other charges for tailoring offender uniform as this is against DCS policies.

“DCS is deeply incensed by this behaviour and there shall be strong action and consequences,” Nxumalo added.

‘DRIP IS FOREVER’: TWEEPS REACT

Four photographs of the inmate were initially posted to Facebook and made their rounds to other social media platforms such as Twitter.

Social media user @BeefWithMeForev took to Twtter to ask who was behind the altering of prison gear, to which one tweep replied, “They do it themselves, those who can sew do it for a fee or another service in exchange. And yah ubhuti is killing these looks hey”

More tweeps weighed in, saying although jail time may be temporary, drip is forever. Drip is a term Ama200 (Gen Z) use to refer to fashion.
