Halloween is a few days away and we honestly would not blame you if you rocked up to a party with one of these quirky hats made by engineering students in the Philippines to prevent them from cheating during their exams.

LADbible reports that the idea was the brainchild of Mary Joy Mandane-Ortiz, professor of mechanical engineering at Bicol University College of Engineering in the Philippines.

ENGINEERING STUDENTS MAKE QUIRKY ANTI-CHEATING HATS FOR THEIR EXAMS

Students at the Bicol University College of Engineering have been forced to wear these hats which are made with various kinds of paper and plastic. Professor Mandane-Ortiz says they have been proven to do the truck, which is to prevent students’ wandering eyes in a sly bid to cheat during exams.

Apart from preventing peripheral vision, the hats probably make a lot of noise if a student’s head is swivelling back and forth as you try to spot what someone else has put down as an answer.

According to the BBC, Professor Mandane-Ortiz had been inspired by an idea from Thailand which went viral back in 2013 where students took their tests wearing ‘ear flaps’. She said wanted a “fun way” to ensure “integrity and honesty” in her classes.

Pictures of the students donning their innovative hats, helmets or Halloween masks went viral. Some used pieces of paper, egg trays and other recycled materials to fulfil the brief.

TIPS TO PASS YOUR EXAMS

With final year exams underway in South African schools and tertiary institutions, these are some times that can help you or your child to ensure knock exams out of the park:

  1. Give yourself enough time to study – Make a study schedule that fits your way of studying and do not leave anything for the last minute.
  2. Use flow charts and diagrams – Visual aids can be especially helpful when revising study material, because we remember things better when they are visualised, according to Hunimed.
  3. Practice on old exams – An old test will help you see the format and formulation of the questions so you can know what to expect. In addition, it helps you with speed because you can measure the time you need for the actual test.
  4. Explain your answers to others – When you can explain your reasoning for why you have answered a certain question in a certain way, it means you fully grasp and understand it. So practice with your friends and family.
  5. Take regular breaks – Regular breaks are needed for the brain to regain its focus. The most important part of studying is to develop a routine that fits your study style.
  6. Snack on healthy food and drink plenty of water – It is advisable not to eat unhealthy food while you are studying. Keep your body and brain fit by choosing natural, fresh and vitamins rich food and remaining hydrated.
  7. Organize study groups with friends – Study groups can help you get the answers you need and finish tasks faster. Remember to work with focused people who want the same goal as you.
