On the 11 of September this year, 22-year-old Gabby Petito’s mother, Nicole Schmidt reported her missing after she had stopped responding to texts and calls. Petito and her fiancé Brian Laundrie were travelling across the US via van and documenting their trip for their YouTube channel called #VanLife.

Soon after she was reported missing in Wyoming in the United States, she became an online sensation as people wondered what happened to the young traveller.

#VanLife gone wrong: What happened to Gabby Petito

After she was reported missing, bodycam footage surfaced that was taken in August this year by Moab police showed Petito visibly upset after she had an altercation with Laundrie. In the footage, she explains how Laundrie doesn’t believe in her dreams of becoming a travel blogger.

“I just quit my job to travel across the country, and I’m trying to start a blog, a travel blog, so I’ve been building my website,” Petito can be heard saying in the footage.

“I’ve been really stressed, and he doesn’t really believe that I can do any of it.”

Laundrie, who is also questioned by the officers, has scratches on his face and neck but appears to be calm.

He explains that he had an argument with Petito who slapped him and scratched him because he stopped driving the van and refused to let her near him until she calmed down.

On September 11, her mother reported her missing after not hearing from her for more than a few days.

And then on Sunday 19 September, a month after the couple’s altercation, the FBI confirmed that the remains of Gabby Petito were recovered near Grand Teton National Park. Later that week her death was ruled a homicide.

Meanwhile her fiancé Laundrie returned to his and Petito’s North Port Florida home on 1 September. After obtaining a search warrant for the home, FBI agents heard that Laundrie had left early in the morning for a hike but never returned.

“Law enforcement agencies continue to search for Brian Laundrie,” a North Port Police spokesman said in a statement.

Before her death, Petito spent an extensive amount of time travelling. Various photos on her personal Instagram page, @GabsPetito, the young lady can be seen in various travel destinations such as Costa Rica, Atlantis Paradise Island in the Bahamas and California.

Business Insider reports that Petito first met Laundrie in 2019 and immediately started travelling with him. She first shared a post of them on their first anniversary together which she captioned:

They also only posted one YouTube video on 19 August to the 7,700 Nomadic Statik YouTube channel, which showed a montage of their travels over the last two years. The bio on the page reads:

“After our first cross country trip in a little Nissan Sentra, we both decided we wanted to downsize our lives and travel full time.

That’s why we handcrafted our own tiny van, a simple 2012 Ford transit connect, utilizing space with unique designs and features.”
