Facebook users flooded Twitter on Wednesday morning (24 August) to report a bizarre glitch in the Meta app as spam messages to celebrities were flooding their feeds — even if they were not following the commenter or celebrity.

USERS REPORT WEIRD FACEBOOK BUG

Netizens took to Twitter to share their Facebook feeds, which were showing posts from fans of singers such as Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish and Harry Styles. Others were seeing posts from rapper Eminem’s fans, as well as footballer Cristiano Ronaldo’s supporters.

The phrase #FacebookHacked became one of the top trending hashtags on Twitter.

A service where people can log problems and outages with websites, called Downdetector, also reported it had thousands of reports of issues with Facebook, with 81% of complaints related to the feed.

META ADDRESSES THE GLITCH

According to CNBC, Facebook parent Meta confirmed on Wednesday that it was made aware of an issue with the company’s feed, adding that it is working on it.

“We’re aware that some people are having trouble with their Facebook Feed. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and we apologise for any inconvenience,” a spokesperson for Meta told the publication.

In an updated statement, a Meta spokesperson said a “configuration change caused some people to have trouble with their Facebook Feed.” The tech company added that the issues have been resolved.
