IS IT OKAY TO DRINK WHILE PREGNANT?

If the pregnancy rumours are true, it may have not been the best thing for Tamia to celebrate with champagne. Professor and chief of labor and delivery at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City told Healthline that alcohol during pregnancy is not safe.

“Alcohol is a poison, no matter how you look at it. There is no safe amount for any pregnant woman to drink because it is different from one person to another. The only safe amount is to not drink alcohol at all in pregnancy,” said Grünebaum.

“We don’t encourage smoking tobacco, heroin, cocaine, or marijuana use in pregnancy, and alcohol is potentially worse,” he continued.

On the other hand – The Guardian reports that moderate drinking during pregnancy does not harm the baby’s development. However, the research showed that the moms who drank in moderation were middle class. So, they had a social advantage.

“They were more socially advantaged. Having a middle-class mum compared to having a working-class mum is likely to advance a child in a lot of ways,” said Professor John Macleod, from the University of Bristol’s School of Social and Community Medicine to The Guardian.

Other health professionals still cautioned against drinking whilst pregnant.

“We recognise that this is useful research. However, there is also a large amount of evidence suggesting that the cumulative effects of alcohol consumption during pregnancy can harm the developing foetus,” said Professional policy adviser Janet Fyle to The Guardian.

“Our advice continues to be that for women who are trying to conceive or those that are pregnant it is best to avoid alcohol,” she continued.
