The British Award organisers have just announced that they will be scrapping all male and female categories. This is part of an effort to be more inclusive. The move has not been accepted well by online folk who say that “woke” culture is going too far.
Gender-neutral Brit Awards upsets the masses
The British Awards is seemingly getting on board with changes to be more inclusive. And have just announced that they will be going gender-neutral in 2022.
For the first time in history, there will be no female and male categories at the award ceremonies to accommodate people who do not identify as a man or a woman.
Event organisers announced on Monday 22 November this week that their aim is to be as “inclusive and as relevant as possible”.
A driver for change
This comes after Sam Smith – who identifies as non-binary – spoke out against the female and male categories at the widely recognised event.
“Music for me has always been about unification not division. I look forward to a time where awards shows can be reflective of the society we live in,” said Smith who is a three-time Brit Award winner.
Shortly after this Brit chair Tom March announced the scrapping of genders at the event.

“It is important that The Brits continue to evolve and aim to be as inclusive as possible. It feels completely the right time to celebrate the achievements of artists. For the music that they create, and the work that they do, irrespective of gender,” reports a Daily Mail article.
Folks are not pleased at all
The news is not welcomed by social media users who are loathing “woke” culture more and more. Many of them have announced plans to boycott the awards ceremony:

Not everyone was upset though. Many people welcomed the change and celebrated the organisers’ effort to become more inclusive.
