Blast from past? Banyana Banyana reveal World Cup kit [photos]

Banyana Banyana  – under the sponsor, Le Coq Sportif – have unveiled their new kit ahead of the Fifa Women’s World Cup, and South Africans are loving the ode to past players

This week, the French sports brand shared pictures of three kits; one for home, another for away, and a third alternative.

The kit was designed by Lwazi Ngcungama, who won a competition last year to create the men’s and women’s national team jerseys for the 2023-24 season. Ngcungama’s designs were chosen via public vote.

WORLD CUP READY? SEE BANYANA’S NEW KIT

In celebration of SA’s Freedom Day this week, Le Coq Sportif unveiled their tweaked versions of the Banyana designs. According to Tshisalive, the designs were approved by Fifa and the SA Football Association (Safa).

The first look – a yellow and green home jersey.

The brand tweeted: “The new LCS x SAFA home jersey carries the South African flag in both the front and back panel, embodying nationhood, patriotism and essence of Ubuntu.”

The second, a green away jersey.

“The new LCS x SAFA away jersey is a celebration of Banyana’s success in Rabat, wearing green when they picked up gold in 2022″.

“A statement piece for a statement team who continue to forge the path for generations to come,” read the post.

And by far the most popular, a third alternative paying homage to the Bafana Bafana’s winning streak in the 90s.

Le Coq Sportif shared: “Alternate Kit dropped. Introducing the all-new in Legacy Jersey.”

SOUTH AFRICANS HAVE THEIR SAY

On social media, SA football fans had varied responses to Banyana Banyana’s new look.

However, the third look had a unanimous positive reception. In fact, many social media users urged the brand to make the nostalgic look as the home jersey instead.
