Party like there’s no pandemic: Ballito Rage to rock on despite new variant

Ballito Rage festival organisers say the five-day event will take place next week despite news of a new COVID-19 variant in South Africa.

The National Institue for Communicable Diseases (NICD) confirmed on Thursday 25 November that a new COVID-19 variant has been detected in South Africa. Despite this news, Ballito Rage organisers have said the post-matric event is still set to take place.

NEW VARIANT: BALLITO RAGE WILL STILL TAKE PLACE 

The Ballito Rage festival is set to take place between Tuesday 30 November and Sunday 5 December on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast. Even after news of the new COVID-19 B.1.1.529 variant was made public, Ballito Rage organisers said it is all systems go for the five-day event. 

Speaking to IOL on Friday 25 November, organisers said they are relying on information from the government and national and local departments of health on information about COVID-19. The organisers further highlighted that they will implement any necessary changes for Ballito Rage if they are required to do so.

“Ballito Rage reiterates that it has all available COVID-19 safety precautions in place, well beyond those mandates by government and advised by our highly skilled COVID-19 team.” 

STRICT COVID-19 REGULATIONS 

Although festival attendees will need to be vaccinated, organisers said that all attendees and staff will need to take two rapid antigen tests, one on arrival and one on the third day of the festival.  

“We further mandated that a negative COVID-19 test must be presented by every guest on arrival at the festival.” 

“We will also make sure that attendees comply with all COVID-19 regulations on site per national guidelines and all testing data will be sent to the Department of Health daily, who will have a task team in support.”

BALLITO RAGE DETAILS 

Speaking to News24, CEO of G&G productions, Greg Walsh mentioned that tickets have been capped at under 2 000 as per the Department of Health’s guidelines on outdoor gatherings. 

On the lineup for the popular event are 947’s Chrizz Beatz, electronic DJs Chunda Munki, Kyle Cassim and Austin Cassim. Also scheduled to perform are afro-tech DJ, DJ Shimza, Kasango who is featured on Zakes Bantwini’s hit song Osama and Durban-born rapper Nasty C.
